What is Actually Happening?
Transcript of President Biden’s Speech
-
This is just a momentary closing of the border – this title suggests Biden will be shutting down the border indefinitely
-
This headline leaves out why this momentary shut down is happening:
-
There are over 5000 people every day attempting to cross the border which cannot be managed with current resources.
-
There is not enough border patrol available to properly police the borders
-
There is an insufficient amount officers to interview people crossing the border to assess if they are threat or not
-
Borders are lacking in the machinery to detect illegal drugs like fentanyl coming in to the country
-
- Missing information about the path forward:
- Biden said in a statement: “I told them I was going to go back and get Dreamers etc., but the thing it did do, it provided for a significant more personnel to make an orderly transfer and allow legal immigration to increase, not decrease and diminish illegal immigration," Biden said
-
Biden might not have the power under current legislation to “shut the border down”
-
Biden and his administration are still trying to see how they can actually make this change without being shut down by the court.
-
By the United States Constitution Article I, Section 8 states, congress has the authority to give “rule of naturalization” – thus it is congress that has the power regarding immigration and foreign entry into the US. Presidents execute these laws and decisions made by congress.
-
During Trump’s presidency, we saw several failed attempts of executive orders to suspend the entry of aliens into the US which were often disregarded by the courts. Trump attempted to do this under a provision of the United States Code, Title 8-Aliens and Nationality, however, the courts still held the power to deny his order.

In the lecture given by the Bishop, he indicates his frustration with Biden “picking and choosing” what parts of the faith to represent in his policies. His speech was about forgiveness and frustration with public figures and institutions. He specifically mentions many people are frustrated with the president and guides his listeners on how to move past destructive lack of forgiveness. In a further statement, the Bishop released a statement apologizing for using the word stupid when referring to the President, admitting that he should have used a more precise word.
Specifically, the Bishop has criticized Biden for his support of the LGBTQ community, abortion, and other policies that do not necessarily align with the catholic faith. However, it is important to note that policies should not be rooted in faith, they are created to serve people of a diverse range of backgrounds, which does not and should not always fit into the mold of a single faith. Modern society is pluralistic, and our policies need to reflect this, regardless of the religious affiliations of our leaders. One of our very human rights is Freedom of Religion which is established into two clauses in the First Amendment: “The Establishment Clause” and the “Free Exercise Clause.” This claim from the Bishop directly contradicts the Establishment Clause, which is controlled under the Lemon Test which states that under the Lemon Test, the government can assist religion only if:
-
The primary purpose of the assistance is secular
-
The assistance must neither promote nor inhibit religion,
-
There is no excessive entanglement between church and state.
While Biden considers himself Catholic, it is inherently against our rights and freedoms to instate laws that promote religion and do not differentiate between church and state.

Providing More Context
The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978 (FISA)
FOX mentions that “FISA surveillance tool renewal” has been passed, but fails to provide the necessary context so that the public can understand what this means.
What Happened in the Senate?
-
The upper chamber of the senate voted in favor of the reauthorization of FISA. The final vote was 60-34 which was completed 40 minutes after the deadline for renewal.
-
They voted in favor to renew Section 702 of FISA.
-
Various senators tried to invoke amendments to the section to promote enhanced national security, however, their fast approaching deadline made it difficult to make amendments as it would then need to be signed by the House.
-
Now President Biden must sign the renewal.
